Offers of employment are usually made after an interview.
Once you have accepted unconditionally, you have entered into a legally binding
contract of employment. So be sure you know what you are accepting before you
give an unconditional acceptance.
At the interview:
ensure that you ask whether your contract is permanent or
otherwise.
ask when a statement of the main terms and conditions of the
contract will be available to you in writing. By law, you must receive such a
statement in writing either with the employment offer or within two months of
starting work, or at least you must be told where you can find the relevant
terms in an easily accessible document. The statement must contain at least
details of the following
You will get a letter offering you the post. If you respond
with an acceptance, this will be evidence that you have entered into a
contract. Make sure that you know what your obligations will be before you
commit yourself. In particular, find out whether you will be required as part
of the contract to carry out any extra-curricular duties such as clubs, or
whether you have a choice of such a requirement being covered by an additional,
separate contract for additional pay. You may not be told when interviewed that
you have extra-curriculum duties as part of your main contract unless you ask,
but you may find when you start work that this is expected.
The offer letter may refer to the Conditions of Service for
School Teachers in England and Wales (Burgundy Book) and to the School Teachers
Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD). These documents contain most of the
information which you are legally entitled to have in writing. The STPCD
contains provisions relating to your pay duties and working time. It cannot
be varied in its application to a teacher working at Durand
The Burgundy Book contains provisions for example about sick
pay and notice periods. The NUT will object to any variation from these
provisions
- School Teachers' Pay and conditions that governs
numerous matters such as pay scales, lunchtime, working hours
- Conditions of service in England and Wales (Burgundy
book)(This governs sickness absence, notice periods)
