Dear Colleague
Teachers' unions in the UK and the Republic of Ireland
have got together to create the petition below: Hands up for Education. We are
calling on our governments to do all they can to ensure that children all over
the world receive free public education by the year 2015. It only takes a
minute, so please go to www.teachers.org.uk and sign this petition now. Then
dig out your e address book and forward this e-mail to everyone you know. With
your help we can put pressure on our governments to live up to their
promises.
Thank you
HANDS UP FOR EDUCATION
. We urge the Governments of the United Kingdom and
the Republic of Ireland to do everything possible to ensure that all the
world¹s children receive free public education by the year 2015 as agreed
by the world¹s governments as a key goal for the new Millennium. The
Governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland should ensure
that this target is central to:
* their aid and development budgets;
* their policies for the relief of debt burdens in
developing countries; and
* their discussions of these issues with other
governments and with international bodies.
NOTES
The British and Irish Group of Teachers¹
Unions is made up of the twelve main teachers¹ unions in the Republic of
Ireland and the United Kingdom, all of whom are affiliated to the world
teachers¹ union body, Education International. At the dawn of a new
millennium, Education International and its broad coalition of teachers¹
unions, and the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the field of
development, joined forces to launch the Global Campaign for Education, for the
achievement of basic rights to education worldwide, in line with the Jomtien
Declaration (1990) and the Dakar Declaration (2000). The alliance represents
organisations active in 180 countries, including Education International, Oxfam
International, Action Aid and the Global March Against Child Labour, and dozens
of regional and national NGO coalitions in developing countries. With your help
we can put the pressure on our governments to live up to their promises.
