Lambeth NUT has managed to secure some notable advances
lately. The Officers and reps working together, refusing to allow managers to
impose, cajole and bully in some cases has made a difference to the lives and
work of many of our members.
There is still much to be done.
The biggest advance has been the recruitment of members and
reps.
That we have grown every year hasn't let us lose sight of
the need to work with our colleagues who belong to other unions. We will
continue to do so, but having been prepared to stand alone when necessary,
refusing to be collaborators in social partnership schemes has made it clear
that the NUT puts its members first, not the government. |
Performance Management
Despite the attempts to enforce more draconian measures into
practice, it has been the union's endeavour to reduce the impact of these
measures, including securing an understanding of the limitations. The most
threatening deice is lesson observations, especially over used in 'school
improvement' areas, whic have been of no use to teachers, students or education
in general.
The local authority have agreed a protocol and if we haven't
posted it on this site, we shall do so soon.
Members and reps should contact us where individual members
or groups are being excessively observed or where, for example too many /
unmanageable targets are being set |
Pay
Once again we are in a pay battle nationally,
and this is reflected in our local activity.
Following a successful rally on 14th June when
350 public sector workers met in Central London, we are intent in seeing that
that enthusiasm isn't lost, but that local energy is put into securing a
sizeable pay increase for all teachers who are facing pay cuts as a result of
the government's pay policy.
We are meeting members in schools. Reps have
been contacted, but if you are keen to have us in school, please contact

Bullying and Harassment
The government's policies and obsession with league tables
is ensuring that we are kept very busy with casework. We do not want to
restrict this to casework as it is not a private matter - it is a general
strategy encouraged by some managers to divide, rule and clear out teachers who
dare to have their own views.
The union will try in every way to defend members, but do
not hesitate to contact us if and when appropriate More coverage on bullying and
harassment |
