STATEMENT FOR LONDON WIDE PAY RALLY UNITED ACTION TO DEFEAT THE PUBLIC SECTOR PAY FREEZE

This meeting of public sector trade union members in London rejects the Government's attempt to impose a 2% limit on public sector pay rises when inflation is running at almost 5%. This amounts to a deliberate policy to reduce the living standards of public service workers. We reject the statement from ministers that our pay levels must be held down in order to pay for spending on improved quality of provision. This amounts to a special tax on public sector workers.

We note the billions being spent on the war in Iraq and believe that this government can afford to increase public sector pay in line with inflation and invest in better services. This is an attack upon all public service workers. We therefore believe that it requires a united response by all public sector trade unions.

If we do not organise a coordinated defence of public sector pay we all face a continuing decline in living standards through multi-year pay deals and the threat of Regional pay and the break up of national bargaining.

We welcome;

  • the decision of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) at their 2007 Conference to call for joint campaigns with other public sector unions and for a ballot for strike action in co-operation with the largest possible coalition of public sector unions as the first stage of industrial action to protect pay
  • the request on 2 April 2007 from the General Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) to other public sector unions to consider joint campaigning to protect pay and applaud those PCS members who took strike action over pay on 1 May 2007
  • the decision of UNISON Health Conference on 23 April 2007 to call for industrial action over pay; · the strike ballot of CWU members currently being held
  • We call upon all public sector trade unions to take all possible steps to coordinate negotiations on pay and to organise industrial action on a joint union basis wherever possible. We urge the Public Sector Liaison Group (PSLG) to make this coordination its highest priority
  • We call upon officials representing our Unions at the PSLG to pursue coordinated strike action to defend our pay. We further resolve to participate, as far as possible, in local activities to coordinate pay campaigns across the public sector trade unions
