Altogether a nicer place to be! |
Lambeth Secondary Pupil Referral Unit,
recently known as Norwood Secondary Centre was established on the Norwood Park
site in 1997. Till 2002 it was the only PRU for secondary students. The very
sensible re-opening of Rectory Grove for KS3 students has changed the
functioning of the Norwood Centre.
However, in recent years the state of the
building has been a major problem, to the extent that the Authority's own
Health and Safety Representative condemned the building and NUT Regional
Secretary, Stuart Cankett considered the building almost beyond use.
The NUT members have been extremely
patient with the LEA, as have the PRU management. At long last, there appears
to be a solution, ironically due to the bungling that has gone on elsewhere by
the LEA.
The existing PRU,as stated was part of
the Norwood Park site, which is also temporarily hosting Crown Lane during
their rebuild. Because of the closure of Grove House which has been part of the
amalgamation that is now Jubilee school, an appropriate building needing minor
adjustments became available.
Both the campaigning of the NUT along
with the PRU management has together appeared to have achieved a result that
means that children educated outside of mainstream and special schools now, at
last, have a place of their own.
It is to the credit of the NUT members
and the management that this has been achieved, perhaps with fortunate timing,
but with little disruption to the students' education. |
