Section 28

11 July 2003

Section 28 bites the dust

The House of Lords' backing for repeal of Section 28 was welcomed by the National Union of Teachers, today 11 July 2003.

John Bangs, head of education and equal opportunities at the NUT, said: "The purpose of Section 28 was to intimidate teachers and young people.

It helped fuel ugly prejudice and create an atmosphere of fear.

"Removing this nasty little piece of legislation has taken a long time but we should all celebrate its demise.

"Now we need to move on to eradicating the causes of homophobia in our society."
