The Teachers' Benevolent Fund is a charity available to any qualified teacher. It is able to help with work related issues: stress, workload, bullying, performance, relationships with colleagues, child welfare etc. Personal, Financial, Family, Marital and Life Management issues.

Being the Lambeth Secretary of the TBF for the past fifteen years has been extremely rewarding. Most of my time is spent visiting collegues from NQT's to retired teachers and supporting their needs. The TBF has generously supported many Lambeth teachers over the years.

Most teachers support the TBF by making small monthly donations direct debit or yearly donations of around £24 (just £2 per month).

If you do not donate and would like to and if you want to know more about this work or apply for assistance, then please telephone me on:

Did you know that you can make a regular monthly donation to TBF at the same time as paying your NUT subscription?

How to get help

If you think someone you know - a retired teacher or their dependant - might benefit from our services, there are two ways you can find out.

Call us yourself to talk it through first, or pass on our phone number to the person in need.

All calls will be referred directly to TBFs Retired Teacher Team. Our team is ready to answer any questions you might have, or to suggest the next step. If you're eligible for a grant, we'll help you apply. If you'd like to speak in confidence to our Money Advice counsellor by phone, we'll make an appointment for you.

When help over the phone isn't enough, our network of volunteers is ready to bring a friendly face to your door - to help you fill in an application form, for example, or to provide a listening ear. Remember, you don't have to be in crisis to contact TBF: the teacher support network. We're here to help you find your way through difficult situations, before they spiral out of control.

We do

At TBF, we believe teachers should be supported throughout their retirement, as well as during their working lives. We all look forward to a happy retirement, free from worry and need. But what happens when things don't go according to plan or, worse, descend into crisis?

At TBF, we've created a new range of support services, free of charge, for retired teachers in need and their dependants. We're here for the retired teacher desperate for advice about her increasingly confused father. Or the retired teacher worried about who will care for her disabled child after her death. Or the teacher's widow on a low income, whose arthritis has made the stairs impossible to climb. Whatever the problem, our dedicated Retired Teacher Team is always ready to listen and help.

A single call opens the door to an integrated service of money advice, grants, help in finding accommodation and care, practical support and, when appropriate, referrals to specialist organisations. If need be, one of our volunteers may be able to visit you at home to offer you support in person.

How we support teachers

0ur Retired Teacher Team has been created to take some of the anxiety out of the difficult situations retired teachers and their dependants may face. Bereavement, illness, disability, caring for elderly relatives, moving into residential care - the potential needs are as wide as the range of services we've designed to meet them.

· Grants for retired teachers on low incomes can help with urgent needs like home repairs, respite care and winter clothing - or provide the adaptations to enable disabled teachers to stay in their own homes.

· Our Money Advice counsellor will answer all your questions - and run a free state benefits check to make sure callers receive all the benefits to which they're entitled.

· Homefinder is our free service helping retired teachers or their elderly dependants, who are thinking of moving into residential or nursing care, to find a home that matches their needs and expectations.

Working in partnership with other organisations, including social services, our

Retired Teacher Team provides a front door to specialist support. If we're not the

most appropriate service to help you, we'll find the one that is.
