Lambeth Teachers Association has the dilemma as we all
do in relation applying for the threshold. We ourselves, along with the
National Union are not calling for a boycott or even for a ballot. The National
Union, as announced in the March 2000 edition of The Teacher is giving
advice on how to apply. The only advice that we can give is don't.
We understand fully the right of members to apply for
a wage increase. The National Union has a demand for £2,000 for all,
supported by our members. The fact that the only way that individuals can get
the increase they desperately need in some cases via the threshold is an
indicment of the failure to conduct an effective fight against PRP in the past
year.
If members are applying for threshold payments,
consider the following:
- you will be at the mercy of senior managers
- the money is not guaranteed for your school, if
there is a budget difficulty, where's the money coming from?
- the money may be there next year, will it be there
the year after?
- the assessment criteria are divisive to the extent
that your application is expected to be 'original' - not pinching anyone else's
ideas.
- it is divised to pit
teacher against teacher - the process will make you competitive rather than
collaborative.
The only answer - and here
the union is thoroughly united is oppose PRP root and branch - £2000 for
all teachers. |
